There are many etiology factors and types in malocclusion. Crowding is perhaps the
most frequently occurring characteristic of malocclusion, especially in Angle's class I
molar relationship.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the dental crowding, overjet and overbite and
its correlation to tooth width and to evaluate Bolton ratio in degree of the dental
crowding. 113 students (55 male, 58 female) with Angle's class I molar relationship
were selected for this study. Impression and wax bite were taken, anti plaster models
were made. The data were measured from the models and analysed statistically.
The results were as follows:
1. There was a correlation between the sum of maxillary 12 tooth and the irregularity
index (p<0.05), and the irregularity index was greatest (6.32mm) when the sum of
maxillary 12 tooth was in 90-102mm.
2. There was a correlation between the sum of maxillary and mandibular 6 anterior
tooth, and mandibular 12 tooth and the irregularity index in the 90 pct. confidence
interval.
3. There was a correlation between the sum of maxillary 12 tooth and the overjet
(p<0.05).
4. There was a positive correlation between the sum of maxillary 12 tooth and the
overjet and a negative correlation between the sum of mandibular 12 tooth and the
overjet in the 90 pct. confidence interval.
5. There was no correlation between the sum of tooth and the overbite.
6. Anterior ratio was 78.7 and overall ratio was 91.03.
7. Anterior ratio and overall ratio were greatest when the maxillary and mandibular
irregularity index was in 3-6mm.
